There are quite a lot of gardens in the city centre dating back from somewhere between 1600 and 1900 A.D. that have been preserved and are worthwhile to visit. At a ‘hofje‘ as we call a hidden garden, the houses are build in a U- or L- shape. They are built around a so called ‘bleekveld‘ , a bleach garden. Rich inhabitants of the city let needy and old people live for free in these tiny houses at the back of their own houses by the street side
That is why these gardens are often hard to see and you will probably be surprised about the places you will come across and the serenity you will find there.
Start and finish points Most tours start near the Central Station or the Dam, because these points are easily accessible and close to many great attractions.
